London-Exkursion

For nearly one week, between Wednesday, the 23rd, and Monday, the 28th July, our three A-levels English courses explored London. We discovered London’s greatest sights, completed varies photo challenges with locals and also had the chance to experience the English pub culture first hand. But let’s start at the beginning…

Wednesday – Arrival, landmarks of London and Houses of Parliament

Right after our arrival in London we went to our hostel and once we had all settled in we were off again to see some landmarks of London and even watched a debate in the „House of Lords“.

Thursday – Boat trip, Greenwich and going to the theatre

On Thursday we went on a boat trip with a very entertaining tour guide who told us about various important places in London. We took the boat to Greenwich, where we walked around a bit and were captivated by famous landmarks like the Cutty Sark and the Greenwich Meridian.

We got an even better view of London’s landmarks from an observation deck, which we then visited together. We also took some fun photos with Mr. Deichl there.

After some free time, we all watched the mystery play „The Mouse Trap“ together in the evening and puzzled over who the culprit might be.

Afterwards, individual groups went out for dinner and went for a rickshaw ride, a definitely recommended activity in London!

Friday – Trip to Brighton

On Friday we went on an exciting daytrip to Brighton.

We started early in the morning and took the train from King’s Cross Station in London to Brighton.

After arriving, we had time to explore the city. The weather was great and we really enjoyed walking through the streets, seeing the sights and spending some time at the beach. Some of us even went into the sea, which was a lot of fun and very refreshing!

In the afternoon we took the train back to London. After arriving, we continued our day with some sightseeing and walking through the city in the evening. London was full of energy, and we had a great time experiencing the atmosphere. To end the day, we went out for dinner and enjoyed some delicious indian food together before heading back to the hostel.

Overall, it was a long but amazing day, filled with great memories and new impressions of England.

Saturday – Portobello Road Market, Notting Hill, and Even Song

After getting some much needed rest, we woke up at around 7 am and headed down to the lobby to get some breakfast before setting off into the city centre. We took the piccadilly line from Russell Square and set off to Notting Hill and its famous Portobello Road Market.

We spent the next 1 and a half hours strolling through the various different shops and stands that offered everything you could think of from jewellery to candles and coconuts. after the clock hit twelve we made our way over to Hyde Park to see Kensington Palace and the garden dedicated to Princess Diana.

Towards 2pm we had some time to spare before our next activity. Our group went to the Borough Market to try some street food and their chocolate covered strawberries. Then we had a walk along the Thames and had a coffee before heading over the Millennium Bridge to St. Paul’s Cathedral where we were able to enjoy the „Even Song“. We were all very impressed by the architectural design and the paintings inside the building.

We left the cathedral at around 6pm and were able to decide how we would want to spend are evening. We went to get some dinner at a pizza restaurant that we all enjoyed before heading back into the city centre.

Before it got too late we took the tube back to the hostel and played some card games before getting some well-deserved rest.

Sunday – Museum tours and pub night

On Sunday, our last day in London, we had the opportunity to visit one of three museums: the Tate Modern, the British Museum, or the Natural History Museum. One great thing about London is that most museums are completely free to enter, which made it easy for everyone to explore something they were interested in.

Our group chose to visit the British Museum. One of the highlights was seeing the famous Rosetta Stone and it was really impressive to see it in real life. We also saw exhibitions from ancient Egypt, including real mummies and coffins, as well as displays about ancient Persia and the Roman Empire. It was amazing to see many cultures and time periods.

Afterwards we were given free time until dinner. So we first of all grabbed lunch at a very tasty Lebanese and Marrocan restaurant close to the hostel. We had one of the best wraps of all times!

Afterwards, we decided to spend the last couple of hours at Covent Garden. We thought that place to really be a hidden gem of London! The market was really colourful, music was played and a lot of sweets were offered. After walking around for a little bit, checking out the boutiques and even seeing a performance of a street magician, we headed back to the hostel.

We spent the last evening in London all together as a group and ate in the O‘Neill‘s pub. We were offered a variety of tasty food and everybody had a great time, reminiscing and talking about the last few days in London!

Additionally, the atmosphere was good too, because England’s female football team, the Lionesses, had just won the Euro 2025 final and everybody celebrated!

Monday – Way home

Wow, time flys when you’re having fun, and that was definitely true for London. Most of us probably would have loved to spend another week in London, but, well, what do they say – you always need a reason to come back!

Thanks a lot to all the teachers, in particular Mr Deichl, for organising this amazing trip to London!
